National Theatre: Paint Frame Placement (PREPARATION!)

28/03/12

I'm set to commence my scenic art placement at the National Theatre on Monday (2nd April). Only one word can describe how I feel - terrified!!

I had my interview with Head of Scenic Art Hilary over a year ago now and the placement is finally happening! My task is create an exact scaled up replica of a painting/image of choice. This will be approx 2mx3m and has to be of the highest quality.

Despite preparing for a year I have still only just decided what I am going to paint! Typical me - indecisive! The image has to be high resolution so I am able to blow it up and focus on detail to copy. I have struggled to find the 'perfect' image (I am a bit of a perfectionist!!).
I am a good painter but I am a little worried about picking anything too challenging however it cannot be too easy at the same time (I need to impress!).

Finally (4 days before my placement...) I have found THE image....

A 1930s film poster -  it combines 'fine art' and figurative painting with text allowing me to experiment with the two. It is also very high res meaning I can blow it up and replicate detail accurately - yes!
There is not tooo much detail on the image however the quantity of text and detail in hair and fabric may prove tricky.
Let's hope I can replicate this....

Now I know what I am painting I feel more relieved and ready and raring to go! The National Theatre is my favourite theatre and arguably one of the best theatres in the world so I'm sure the placement will be amazing regardless.
I have recently seen The Comedy of Errors and DV8's 'Can We Talk About This?' at the National both of which where amazing performances. The Comedy of Errors was designed by Bunny Christie - my favourite current designer. I love level of detail and imagination. Nothing is impossible in her world. Amazing.

I have my painting. I have my brushes... now to wait!!

Introduction to my work

Training: BA (hons) degree in Theatre Arts (Design and Technical Theatre) at Middlesex University.

Over the last three years I have developed my skills in theatre design and making. My focus is in set design/scenic art. I also enjoy prop making.

Alongside my degree I have strove to obtain professional work to give me an insight into the industry. This blog will follow my progress on future placements and summarize any previous work experience.

This blog is to display my work and track my progress as I takes the steps from student to creative!
